About the VPA
The Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) is a statutory authority reporting to the Minister for Planning, responsible for planning places with a long-term, strategic vision for growing communities across Victoria. Our role is to ensure that Victoria remains a great place to live, work and relax, with equitable access to employment, public transport, attractive public space, and affordable housing for all residents and visitors.
Our partners include other government agencies, the development industry, and communities in our quest to achieve quality planning growth outcomes throughout urban, greenfields, and regional towns and cities.
The VPA has a key role in delivering initiatives articulated in the long-term planning blueprint for our capital city, Plan Melbourne 2017-2050, and in the Government’s long term housing strategy Homes for Victorians.
We undertake strategic and coordinated planning for land use, built form and infrastructure to unlock the growth and transformation of Victoria’s cities and towns – new suburbs on Melbourne’s urban fringe, areas undergoing change and renewal in the established areas of Melbourne and growth areas in our regional cities and towns.
The VPA employees a wide range of professionals involved in the planning process, including:
- Strategic and structure planners, servicing Inner, Middle, & Outer Melbourne and also Regional Victoria
- Statutory planners
- Infrastructure Planners and Engineers
- Economists and research analysts
- Urban designers
- Graphics and GIS specialists
- Communications, Policy & Engagement advisors
