Welcome to the VPA

The VPA is a new government authority reporting to the Minister for Planning that will help manage Victoria’s strong population growth by planning for greater housing and business choices in key precincts across Victoria.

Building on the success of the Victorian Planning Authority (MPA) in planning new and established suburbs, the VPA will also extend its focus to Victoria’s diverse regional cities and towns.

To ensure that regional Victoria receives assistance to manage their different growth pressures, the Victorian Government has provided the VPA with $2.1 million to fund a specialist regional unit.

This unit will work closely with regional councils and communities to promote development and jobs.

This funding is in the form of both grants and capability building, in order to speed up planning work in areas where councils have requested support.

The VPA will work closely with local councils and hand-in-hand with the community, with enhanced community engagement being a new feature of the VPA.

The VPA has been funded for a further $2 million to streamline sub-division processes and unlock strategic development sites across the state for housing and jobs.

This will involve overhauling ‘brownfield sites’ – areas under-utilised or no longer used for their original purposes – and encouraging a greater diversity of jobs in the six National Employment Clusters designated under Plan Melbourne.
