Project Status Updates – December 2022

The Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) has been progressing the planning for Croskell by finalising our technical reports and engaging with the local community and Government agencies on key issues and opportunities for the future precinct.

Since our last update in October, we have:

  • Hosted two information sessions for community members to ask us questions. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet some of the Croskell locals and discuss the future of this exciting new neighbourhood.
  • Worked with Melbourne Water and other partners to develop the drainage scheme for the area
  • Progressed a number of technical reports, including the Landscape and Visual Character Assessment, Community Infrastructure Assessment and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Interpretation Strategy
  • Finalised our arboriculture report, which is available via the Documents tab below

High-voltage transmission line

One of the key planning challenges for the precinct is an underground power cable that runs east-west through the precinct. This power cable supplies electricity to the Victorian desalination plant in Wonthaggi, which supplies a significant portion of Melbourne’s water.

As any damage or disruption to this cable would have significant consequences to Melbourne’s water supply, the VPA is working closely across Government to manage the assessment process for any new crossings, such as roads, shared paths or other infrastructure over the cable. We are undertaking a cost benefits analysis to weigh the benefits of new crossings against the risks of damage or disruption to the cable.

In the coming months we will be focused on finalising additional background documents and preparing a suite of draft plans for consultation with Casey City Council and Government agencies in 2023.
