Thriving new community and jobs in Melbourne’s west

The Victorian Government is giving the Altona community a chance to help transform a former industrial site in Altona North into a vibrant new community.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne today released the Altona North Comprehensive Development Plan – a vision for a new neighbourhood, complete with 3000 homes and 1000 local jobs.
Now out on consultation, the plan includes a network of tree-lined streets and laneways, a new town centre on Blackshaws Road with shops, a supermarket and civic space, and commercial office space. The plan was prepared by the Victorian Planning Authority in consultation with Hobsons Bay City Council.

There will be a large central park and four other local parks for families to enjoy, and an extensive network of bike paths that connect with the popular Federation Trail.
Developers of the precinct will also contribute more than $50 million towards community infrastructure projects.

The new community will feature at least five per cent affordable housing, and buses to Newport and Spotswood train stations – just a 20-minute train trip to Flinders Street Station.
The site was once a hub of industry, but the majority of businesses have relocated. It’s currently zoned for industrial uses, but the Labor Government is taking action to build a precinct that will cater for population growth, provide more affordable housing and give young families a great community.

The Labor Government’s new Plan Melbourne includes the framework for urban renewal projects that will build great new communities, generate more jobs closer to home and protect Melbourne’s renowned liveability.
